..National Symposium for Tamil School Headmasters

The opening ceremony of the National Symposium in the presence of the Minister of Education, Dato' Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

National Symposium for Tamil School Headmasters held on 13,14, & 15 August 2004 at Islamic Academy, University Malaya was financially supported by Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED). The symposium 2004 was jointly organized by MIED, Tamil School National Action Council and Indian Studies department of University Malaya involving 300 participants, Tamil School headmasters, Tamil School supervisors at the state level, Assistant Directors of Tamil language unit from state education departments, officers from government and non governmental agencies, representatives from Malaya Tamil School Teachers Union, National Union of Teaching Profession and Indian Studies Department of University Malaya.

Dato' Seri S. Samy Vellu, Minister of Works and Dato' Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Minister of Education graced the opening ceremony on 14 August 2004 at 2.30pm. The view of the Ministry Of Education and of those taking part in the symposium was that comprehensive reforms were ended along with new educational and organizational methods. The Tamil School Headmasters Symposium has become a bi-annual event to ensure continuous development of Tamil school in this country. The focus of this three day professional development opportunity includes discussion and exchange of ideas on issues faced by Tamil schools. The symposium is also expected to pave way for the headmasters and Tamil educationists to draft an action plan for the upliftment of Tamil schools.

The theme of the symposium is "Instructional Leadership Towards Excellence". In line with this, experienced speakers and panelist in the education field were invited to present papers and ideas on several topics related to the development of Tamil schools. Among them were, Instructional Leadership in Tamil school, issues and challenges faced by Tamil schools, new trends and thinking in teaching and learning process and so on. The topics discussed in the symposium contributed to the creation of a new image in the leadership of Tamil schools headmasters. Our thanks are due to all of our Symposium 2004 participants!
